I am a journalist, and in this ever-changing age I remain optimistic and passionate. I see the need now more than ever for news organizations to take the lead in being rapidly accurate in their online coverage, calculated and savvy in their digital presentation and contextually sound in print.

I have a special place in my heart for sports, and the drama of seeing athletics live continually finds new ways to interest me. I am proud to be contributing in myriad ways to Iowa's biggest and best sports section at The Des Moines Register, both in print and increasingly online. But my balanced practical experience — through editing work at The Miami Herald in the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund program and a multitasking, award-winning approach at the Rapid City (S.D.) Journal — has me interested in advancing the conversation in all sorts of ways. My first forays into journalism expanded beyond the sports world, too, through my education reporting work at the Columbia (Mo.) Missourian, the city's morning newspaper.

I realize that the industry's future remains fluid, but that has not altered my desire to continue working in our field. I know I have the energy and the skill set to quickly bolster a newsroom, and I wholeheartedly hope I can keep helping the industry forge ahead.
